By now you are probably aware of Superior Drummer 2.0 the latest offering from Toontrack. The tag line of the product pretty much sums up what type of drum sounds you get "New York Legacy Series". What this means is that Superior comes with drum kits that have been recorded in some of the best and most famous recording studio live rooms in New York. These studios include Avatar Studios, The Hit Factory and Allaire Studios. Volume 1 is focus on Avatar Studios and it's great live room.
This means you are not just getting 20 GB of incredible samples but samples created in the most professional of environments using the same rooms, mics and techniques and engineers that the pros use. Talk about getting a boost to your own tracks!
So yes the samples are good, if not great, and that would be enough right there. Superior 2.0 does not stop there it also comes with a suite of effects for shaping and sculpting your sound. This is where you can truly make these samples your own.
Don't know how to play drums? No problem! Of course it can be a bit intimidating to have all of these great samples and have to program them into a perfect drum line that truly does them justice. Toontrack has taken care of this for you as Superior Drummer comes with an entire library of MIDI patterns to jump start your mix.
Toontrack partnered with developer Sonalkis to create their suite of effects. There's a five band graphical EQ, high and low pass filter, gate, compressor and Transient.
The 5 band EQ has a simple graphical interface and is very easy to use. The Eq is great for emphasizing the crack in a snare or to add some extra snap on a kick drum.
If you want to add some extra sizzle to your overheads then the high and low pass would be the best choice.
For dynamic processing the gate and compressor are the perfect choice. Dynamics processing what does that mean? Without getting into another articles worth of info you can use the compressor to tighten up the volumes of the mix and go for that classic rock sound. If you want to have the decay time of the drums cutoff "think Phil Collins sound" then use the gate.
Finally there is the Transient. This is a great tool for sculpting the sound of you drums. For example you can change the way a kick drum's attack sounds or you can change how long the drum is heard for. This is one of those effects (like a compressor) that once you start using and understanding it you will never want to go without it.
If you are a drummer with an electronic kit like V-Drums or triggers you will love Superior 2.0 It has been designed with you in mind. You can even control the mic bleed between the different drums to get that natural sound. The velocity scaling ensures that the samples feel "playable" to a drummer and have a natural response.
Finally, you can mix your entire kit using the mixer. Just like EZ Drummer you can add any of the EZXpansion packs to Superior to expand your sonic palette further. Superior drummer 2.0 will run with just about and AU, VST or RTAS host on either the Mac and PC.
